The opposition from the Moderates prefers a more traditional architecture similar to that found at the NK house in Stockholm.

– Gothenburgers yearn for a beautiful urban environment and that is what attracts tourists to our city. They are not attracted by these brutal GDR facades, possibly some communists, says Hampus Magnusson (M), second vice-chairman of the urban planning committee, to GP.

The facade of the NK building in Gothenburg is proposed to undergo renovation and new floors are to be built. Johannes Hulter (S), chairman of the city planning committee, describes it as a “giant lift”.

But the Moderates, together with the Christian Democrats, the Liberals and the Democrats, are not at all impressed by the plan. Instead, they want to preserve the character of the historic city center and renovate the facade in a more classic style – with inspiration from the NK house in Stockholm.
