The purpose of the visit was to coordinate NATO's and the Armed Forces' ongoing defense planning.

– The fact that NATO has chosen Gotland for its visit is due to the island's strategic location. Gotland has a central position in the Baltic Sea and is important for the defense of both Sweden and NATO, says Fredrik Ståhlberg, deputy head of operations management at the Headquarters, in a statement.

According to Mark Pullan, head of planning at the headquarters in Brunssum, the defense of Gotland has many challenges. For NATO, it was therefore important to be physically on the island and see what it looks like. In other words, it is not enough to just look at a map.

– Gotland is and always will be significant for the Baltic Sea region. For those of us who work with defense planning, it is therefore important to create a better and deeper understanding of what it looks like on site, says Mark Pullan.

According to him, it is also of the utmost importance that the island does not become isolated in the event of a conflict. It is therefore important that there is the right amount of soldiers and equipment on the island in the event of a crisis.

During the visit to Gotland, they passed, among other things, Visby Airport, P 18, Visby Harbor and Slite Harbor.
