Google starts construction of fourth data center in Groningen

Google has started building its fourth data center in the Dutch province of Groningen. According to the municipality of Groningen, no new data centers are allowed to be added on its territory, but the arrival of this smaller building has been planned for some time and can therefore continue.

Google will start using the servers next year, the company writes. . This involves an investment of a total of 600 million euros and it should create 125 direct jobs. The data center will be located on the Westpoort industrial estate, along the railway line to the Frisian capital Leeuwarden. The arrival of the data center has been known for some time.

The data center is necessary due to the increased demand for AI and cloud services, the company says. It concerns a relatively small data center of eight hectares, which in total will be located on twenty hectares of land that the company has purchased.

To reduce the impact on local energy and water consumption, the cooling machines will working with air cooling. According to Google, residual heat from cooling can be captured and transferred to other companies. Power comes partly from solar panels on the roof, as in many companies.
