Not even four syringes protect against omikron

The Swedish Public Health Agency recommends all Swedes from the age of 18 and upwards to take a third dose of covid-19 vaccine – a so-called “refill dose”.

In Israel, the majority of the population has already taken the third syringe and an expert panel recommended on Monday that everyone over 18 should receive a fourth syringe, something called a “second refill dose”.

At the same time, a study of Israeli researchers that not even four syringes provide satisfactory protection against the now dominant virus variant omicron.

When Pfizer's CEO Albert Bourla in a TV interview last Saturday was asked if he was disappointed with the effect the vaccine has given in recent months , he confessed that he was.

– Were you disappointed with the vaccine's effect these months, because when we took the third injection it was thought that it would protect for at least six months or more? asked the reporter on the Israeli TV channel N12 News.

– I am always disappointed when something does not turn out as well as we had hoped it would. But we know that the situation with this virus is a challenge. That is why we are taking many steps. Right now, for example, we are doing studies with larger doses, ie larger amounts of vaccine, we are doing studies with a hybrid vaccine, against omicron and delta. We want to cover all possible scenarios so that we can protect, Albert Bourla replied.

He also said that he does not think it is a good idea to give the population refill doses as often as every four or five months. . Instead, he recommended that refill doses be given once a year, as it would then be “easier to convince people” to take the syringes.

– We will find out if we can create a vaccine that covers omicron without to forget the other variants. That could be a solution, Bourla said.
