INEOS Grenadier, first contact with the off-road heir to the Defender

In 2017 Sir Jim Ratcliffe , president of INEOS – one of the most major chemical companies of the world -, he had a very particular idea. On the market, the & quot; old school & quot; off-road vehicles they were almost completely gone. For this, and & ograve; to create INEOS Automotive Limited which then developed the Grenadier, an uncompromising off-road vehicle , completely designed from the ground up, designed to face any situation and able to offer very high levels of robustness and reliability.

Pu & ograve; be seen as the heir to the first series of the Defender , a model that today has lost its pure off-road vocation to become a more powerful vehicle; close to the world of SUVs. Currently, 130 prototypes have been built of the INEOS Grenadier that will have to travel 1.8 million km to allow the manufacturer to verify that everything is in order before the actual launch on the market.

And speaking of the debut of the off-road vehicle, production will start; from July 2022. Deliveries to customers, on the other hand, will start from September 2022. Si pu & ograve; already book (deposit of 450 euros refundable), also from Italy, at a price of 60,500 euros VAT included (without IPT and putting on the road). INEOS has made it known that pre-orders are already going; very well and that Italy, as a market, is behind only Germany.

We had the opportunity to see this off-road vehicle live and take a ride at the International Off-road Motor Show which is happening; performed in Viareggio.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Unfortunately it is not; it was possible to drive the Grenadier but only to board the off-road vehicle as passengers to be led inside a particularly difficult off-road route in which the vehicle showed all its potential; . A very short tour which, however, made us want to have it at hand as soon as possible for a thorough test.

Car manufacturers are effectively “forgetting” of similar products and there was a need for a model like the Grenadier to remind you that real off-road vehicles still have their reason to exist. This model & egrave; all substance and few frills . The design & egrave; square and sober and you can see on the body several attachments to connect external accessories and the rear ladder to get on the roof.

What is most surprising are the interiors. All the controls are physical and well manageable. Beautiful panel placed on the sky that integrates a series of controls that makes the cockpit look like that of an airplane. Panel from which sar & agrave; It is also possible to manage all the accessories that will be installed, such as the lights on the roof. Centrally & egrave; there is a 12.3-inch maxi display of the infotainment in which there are also driving indications such as speed; and engine revolutions. The materials are very robust to be able to withstand all uses for a long time. The seats are made by Recaro. No precious coverings but just a lot of substance.


In the short journey that we have faced as passengers, the Grenadier has shown all its qualities; true off-road. Slopes of all types and deep holes were tackled without any problem, demonstrating that the potential of this medium are very high indeed. That's why & eacute; we would like to try it again to test even more & ugrave; its off-road characteristics. During the test, there & egrave; it has also been said that the off-road vehicle & egrave; able to tackle fords up to 80 cm deep .

C '? EVEN A P? DI ITALIA The off-road can & ograve; be chosen with two engines derived from BMW : a 3-liter 6-cylinder diesel with 249 hp (183 kW) and 550 Nm of torque and a 3-liter 6-cylinder petrol engine with 285 hp (210 kW) and 450 Nm of torque. In both cases & egrave; there is an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. We also have a two-speed reducer; for the more & ugrave; challenging. The frame is side members with rigid axles and underbody protection. The equipment also includes the presence of Bridgestone All-Terrain or BF Goodrich KO2 tires.

In the off-road project there is; even a little bit of Italy . In fact, the Grenadier adopts axles made by Carraro, Brembo brakes and steering components by Turin-based Frap. The production of the off-road vehicle will take place; inside the Hambach factory , Germany, which INEOS acquired from Mercedes. Site where the smart EQ fortwo is still built today. Grenadier since its debut will be & agrave; approved for both N1 and M1.

As regards the commercial network, INEOS is entering into agreements with commercial and after-sales partners all over the world for the opening of approximately 200 sales and service points.
