As laurooon describes in his initial post, his house in the Ahr Valley was completely flooded on the first and second floors on July 14, 2021. The house as such is insured, but its contents insurance does not apply in the event of natural damage to the household, which is why laurooon is currently trying to save what can be saved.

This also includes the recently built computer, on which he at least wants to try to get the most important components running again. This primarily affects an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, 32 GB of RAM and an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT. Since the person seeking help is currently in a makeshift shelter and lacks the opportunity and the materials to clean the components that have been completely rinsed with sludge, they turn to the ComputerBase forum and look for help with this endeavor.

The community stands together

Help for cleaning and testing the system is quickly found. While the ComputerBase member ghecko takes care of the cleaning and testing of the system, the users “Asghan, QwayZee and Dr. McCoy “power supply, case and SSD hard drive. If the mainboard and the RAM are defective after testing, “Pisaro” has suggested a remedy. Others provide RAM, power supplies, case fans and processor coolers if required.

The editors would like to thank all those who helped and keep their fingers crossed for the project. Please use the relevant thread for further assistance. The editors will report on the further course of the rescue operation.

der8auer shows cleaning of a flood PC in detail

Overclocker and hardware specialist Roman “der8auer” Hartung has also already taken on a flood computer. In three videos – so far without a final result – Hartung has undertaken the rough cleaning of the system and started to look at individual components in detail. The Radeon RX 6900 XT, which is also built into the PC, turned out to be irreparably damaged with a crack in the circuit board. It is unclear whether this happened on the transport route or possibly during the flood events.
