FlixBus has announced the introduction of the first long-distance passenger bus into its fleet < strong> powered by biogas . This vehicle will operate on the Stockholm-Oslo route . This novelty & egrave; made possible thanks to the collaboration with Scania (which also works on electric buses in Sweden) and the gas supplier Gasum. Usually, the biogas is used on city buses, cars and light transport vehicles as it is less competitive for heavy long-distance vehicles.

However, in recent years & egrave; A technology has been developed that allows the biogas to be cooled to temperatures of about 160 degrees below zero, so that it becomes liquid and therefore more; full of energy. This technical solution opens the way to the possibility; to use gas for heavy transport, both by land and by sea. The European Union then decided to create biogas refueling points along the main European road networks and this allows to increase its availability; on the European territory.

The advantages of using liquid biogas are different. In fact, it is; fossil free, renewable, locally produced and reduces emissions.

By switching to locally produced liquid biogas as a fuel for industrial vehicles and long-distance passenger transport, operators reduce the climate impact, both of their own and of their customers, by more than 90%. The quality & agrave; of the air also improves thanks to the reduction of emissions of particles and nitrogen oxides (NOx), moreover the vehicles are more; silent, an advantage for both drivers and passengers and for the environment in general.

The FlixBus biogas bus, therefore, will reduce & agrave; environmental impact and will contribute to the green transition of the passenger transport sector between the two Nordic capitals where it will operate. Jonas Str & ouml; mberg , Sustainability Director of Scania, commented:

Biogas will be & agrave; one of the key tools for the decarbonisation of heavy transport, especially for long distance operations such as intercity and long haul. Met & agrave; of the European gas heavy vehicle fleet could be fueled by biogas by 2025.
