Cloudflare averted more than 4.5 million DDoS attacks in the first quarter of 2024. According to the company, this is half more than in the same period last year. It is striking that the number of DDoS attacks aimed at Sweden increased by 466 percent after March 7.

Cloudflare writes in its annual threat report that the 4.5 million registered DDoS attacks constitute approximately a third of the number DDoS attacks that the company has repelled throughout 2023. Cloudflare also reports that DDoS attacks via HTTP have increased by 93 percent compared to the same period last year. The share of DDoS attacks via DNS is said to have increased by 54 percent during the first quarter of this year. In such attacks, DNS servers are bombarded with requests, so that they can no longer handle normal internet traffic.

The largest DDoS attack that Cloudflare has stopped so far in 2024 comes from a Mirai-like botnet . This botnet is said to have targeted an Asian hosting provider. The attack reached a speed of 2Tbit/s. Cloudflare reports that attacks via Mirai-like botnets are still common. Finally, the company reports that it has registered 466 percent more DDoS attacks on Swedish websites. According to Cloudflare, the increase took place shortly after Sweden joined NATO. That happened on March 7, 2024.
