Huawei is said to be building a large factory to build its own lithography machines for the production of chips, business newspaper Nikkei reports. To this end, it has hired staff who worked at the Dutch ASML.

The campus will be located in the Chinese city of Shanghai, Nikkei reports. The municipality has confirmed the plans and Nikkei has heard from sources that Huawei wants to work on its own lithography machines there. There are now several important suppliers worldwide for this purpose, including the Dutch ASML.

Huawei is said to have attracted staff with salaries that are twice as high as at other companies. In addition to staff from ASML, Huawei has hired people who have worked at chip manufacturers such as Intel, Micron and TSMC. In addition to lithography machines, the campus also has R&D departments for developing chips and smartphones.

Due to trade restrictions imposed by the US, China has limited access to lithography machines. ASML is no longer allowed to supply EUV and DuV machines to the country. China wants to be less dependent on other countries and therefore tries to keep as much control as possible.
