Game developer Relic Entertainment has announced that it will continue as an indie studio. The company was acquired by SEGA in 2013. Thanks to an external investor, the studio can now continue independently.

Relic Entertainment shares the news on X. There the company calls the step a 'huge opportunity' and promises to continue to support existing titles. It has not been revealed who made the investment that allows Relic to continue as an indie.

Relic Entertainment is a Canadian studio that has been around since 1997. The studio is known for games such as Age of Empires IV and franchises such as Company of Heroes, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Homeworld. In 2004, the studio was acquired by THQ, a game developer and publisher that went bankrupt in 2012.

Relic Entertainment was then acquired by SEGA in 2013, of which it has been part until now. On X, Relic Entertainment thanks SEGA for its support and guidance. “We may no longer be part of SEGA, but we remain friends and colleagues,” the studio writes.
