Meta has started testing some WhatsApp features that will allow users to edit photos using AI. This way, they can add backgrounds or expand the image with a prompt.

AI-related functions will become available in the image editor in WhatsApp, WABetaInfo and TheSpandroid report. The sites discovered the options in version 2.23.17.14 of the WhatsApp beta on Android. The editing functions are not yet functional, but two of the three have previously been announced for the image editors in Facebook and Instagram. These are Backdrop and Restyle.

The former makes it possible to replace the background of the image with an AI-generated background, which users can generate with a prompt. With the Restyle option, existing images can be adjusted to a completely different style thanks to an AI filter.

The third option, Expand, is exclusive to WhatsApp for the time being. It looks like this should make it possible to expand the size of the image. The missing parts of the image are probably filled in with AI. It's not yet clear if or when these AI editing features will become generally available. Previously, a feature was added that allows users to create AI-generated stickers via WhatsApp.
