Qingping makes a thermometer and humidity meter with Thread, which is an interesting competitor to the Eve Room ($99). However, it only costs half.

Measuring temperature in the room

Recently, Apple has ensured that you can use the temperature and humidity sensor in the HomePod to take measurements. You can start automations based on that. But what if you only want to take measurements and do not need an extra speaker? Then you will soon end up at Aqara or the Eve Room (€99). It can also be cheaper: for 45 euros you can buy the Qingping Temp & RH Monitor.

Qingping: Chinese manufacturer of HomeKit accessories

With the brand name Qingping you don't have to think long about where the manufacturer is located. The Chinese manufacturer was founded in 2015 with investment money from (how could it be otherwise) Xiaomi and has since become a ‘Xiaomi Eco-chain’ member. Qingping won awards from the Beijing Design Innovation Center, multiple iF Design Awards and a Red Dot Design Award. But for Apple users it may be more interesting to know that they have also obtained the MFi certificate for certain products and that they support both HomeKit and Thread.

The accessory we want to discuss here is the Qingping Temp & RH Monitor, or a wireless sensor that measures both temperature and humidity. Based on this, you can perform actions and automations. The white housing is sleek and the e-ink display is easy to read. There is a fold-out foot at the back, with which you can place the display at two angles. It can also be attached to the mitten and you can ‘attach it to the fridge with a magnet.

You do have to make sure that you have the T version of this sensor, because only that works with Thread én HomeKit. On the Qingping website you can clearly see the differences between the T, H and M models, so you can't go wrong. The measurements are quickly synchronized via Thread with the manufacturer's app, where you can also view the measurements from the past 24 hours and even up to 30 days. In addition, it works with Homekit.

The only drawback is probably the price: with such a Chinese product from an ‘unknown’ brand you expect that it can still be a bit cheaper, so that you can fill your entire house with such sensors. Especially when you consider that you can buy a HomePod mini for around 100 euros, where both sensors serve as an ‘extra’ worry. Those who only want to see how warm it is in the room from time to time are well served with a HomePod mini. But if you want to get started with automations and shortcuts, then this sensor from Qingping is best to consider.
