When it's almost September, you know they're coming again: the new Apple Watch models. We are eagerly awaiting the new straps, but especially the watch. Has the design been updated? Have the edges become narrower again? And are there new sensors in it? With the addition of the Apple Watch Ultra, the outlook is more exciting than ever. In this article, we look ahead at the expected new features for the Apple Watch in 2023.

#1 Apple Watch in 2023: which models you can expect?

We can probably expect two new models this year:

  • Apple Watch Series 9
  • Apple Watch Ultra (new model)

The Apple Watch Series 9 will be the logical successor to the current Apple Watch Series 8. Whether the Apple Watch Ultra will also receive a successor with slightly better specs this year is not yet entirely certain. But we do expect it, since this top model has to keep up with the times. There were once rumors that another sporty, lower-priced version of the Apple Watch Ultra would be released, but we honestly don't expect that. The line-up would then become too broad and confusing.

The chance that the Apple Watch SE 2022 will now be followed up again does not seem very credible to us. Apple will probably skip one or two years and will release a successor to the budget model in 2024/2025.

#2 Two models, two designs

It is possible that the Apple Watch Series 9 will take over some features from the Ultra. It's been a while since Apple updated the design of the normal Apple Watch. The Series 4 got a larger screen and the Series 7 had narrower screen edges, but nothing changed in the basics. Apple could opt for the somewhat flatter screen of the Ultra, but we wouldn't be surprised if Apple kept the design with the Series 9 the same and only chose different colors.

With the Apple Watch Ultra, little will be done to the design. This model has only just appeared and usually the design lasts a few years before real changes occur. There are rumors that Apple wants to switch to a microLED in 2024 and that would be a perfect time to immediately adjust the design, for example with even narrower screen edges.

#3 Display: flat ?

We already wrote in the design that the Apple Watch Series 9 might take over the flat screen of the Ultra, but in an aluminum housing and in a size of 41mm and 45mm. We do not expect any changes with the Apple Watch Ultra.

#4 Features in 2023 Apple Watch models: less innovative than hoped?

Apple would like to focus all attention on the mixed reality headset in 2023. According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, this has consequences for the other hardware and software. Apple would have transferred as many engineers as possible to the headset teams to make the introduction a success. This would reduce the number of updates for the Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad and other product groups, both in terms of devices and software updates. Functions that have been talked about for years, such as blood pressure and blood sugar measurement, will not be ready for prime time.

Apple will mainly focus on improving existing functions, such as longer battery life or some extra sleep functions. A renewed chip ensures that the Apple Watch receives updates for longer.

General improvements: our wishes

We do have a number of suggestions for Apple with improvements for upcoming Apple Watch models:

  • Standard wireless charging: Charging the Apple Watch can still only be done with the special Apple Watch charger, while Apple once planned differently with the AirPower. We therefore hope for support for regular Qi chargers every year, although we are also happy with the support of MagSafe.
  • Renewed buttons: Apple could update the buttons on the Apple Watch. So no longer a physically pressable button, but a button that simulates the feeling of a real button with a tap of the Taptic Engine.

#5 Release of Apple Watch 2023 models

Apple is likely to announce the new models in September 2023. This is in line with the announcements made in previous years. This will then be during the big iPhone 15 event of 2023. We expect the release mid-September.

#6 Price Apple Watch 2023 models

In terms of price, we do not expect major changes. The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra are already at their peak in price fairness and we don't expect any further corrections related to inflation.

These are the expected prices:

  • Apple Watch Series 9 aluminum: from €499,-
  • Apple Watch Series 9 Cellular aluminum: from €619,-
  • 41mm Apple Watch Series 9 Cellular stainless steel : from €849.-
  • 49mm Apple Watch Ultra: €999.-
