Why trade in your iPad to Apple?

Apple has a Trade In program. This means that you can trade in your old device and receive a discount on the purchase of a new product. This way you can upgrade to a new iPad at a discount and your previous copy will also yield something. Moreover, it is better for the environment, because usable parts and materials can be processed in a new or refurbished iPad.

It works like this: you answer a number of questions about the status of the iPad you want to trade in. You will then receive a quote and if you agree, you can hand in your old iPad. You will then receive an Apple gift card, which can be used in the Apple Store or for other Apple services. So you don't have to immediately buy a new one and it can also be a different product (for example a set of AirPods). If you use the gift card for a new iPad, that will usually not be enough. But paying extra will get you a long way.

Please note: the iPad must still work and be able to be switched on. With a ‘dead’ You will not be reimbursed for an iPad or one that is in an endless bootloop. The only option then is to hand in your iPad for recycling.

Apple will ensure that all personal data is erased from the device, if you have not already done so yourself. This prevents them from ending up in the wrong hands.

Trade in an iPad to Apple: what does it yield?

Apple has a special page where all fees are listed. This is what you get for your old iPad:

Model Current reimbursement iPad Pro Up to €545,- iPad Air Up to €255,- Standard iPad Up to €195,- iPad mini Up to €270,-

Last update date: January 2023.

The Apple Store gift card you receive can be spent on all (hardware) products sold in the Apple Store, including covers, screen foils or a new iPad. If you don't need anything new, you can add the balance to your Apple account and use it for apps or services such as Apple Music, Apple One or iCloud+.

If your iPad is damaged or you have a very old model, it is possible that you will not get anything for it, but that you can only hand in the device for recycling. Please note that the amounts in the table are the maximum reimbursements. In reality it can always be lower.

You can also return several products at once, but each will be treated separately and you will receive a separate Apple Store voucher for each. Of course you can bundle those vouchers and buy a new iPhone or something else in one go.

Hand in iPad to Apple: how does it work?

There are two ways to return your iPad to Apple: send it in or go to the Apple Store (if available). Apple works together with external companies for this, which take care of the further processing.

Send:
If you agree to the specified reimbursement, Apple's partner will send you a free prepaid trade-in kit, where you can put your tablet. Your device will then be inspected by the company. If it's in the condition you described, you'll receive an Apple Store Gift Card worth the quoteamount. If not, you will receive a new quote from the partner company.

You can then agree to the new quote, or have your device returned free of charge. The process usually takes 2 to 3 weeks. The sooner you send your device, the sooner it can be handled.

Bring it in:
If the Apple Store is nearby, you can also visit one of Apple's stores without an appointment. You will then immediately receive a discount on the purchase of a new product. If you don't want to buy something new right away, Apple will forward the device to the recycling partner. You will then receive a voucher that you can spend on new products from the Apple Store. You can go to the Apple Stores in Amsterdam, Haarlem, The Hague and Brussels. Outside the Benelux, the Apple Stores of Oberhausen, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Lille (France) are the closest.

Trade-in alternatives

Do you think the price Apple pays is too low, but would you rather not sell your iPad to a private individual? Then you can give it a try with these providers of refurbished iPhones. They often give a slightly better reimbursement for your used Apple product. There are other shops where you can try to trade in your iPad, such as Amac.
