When Disney+ started in the Netherlands in 2019, you paid (after the free period of two months) € 6.99 per month. But in 2021, the first price increase of €2 per month was implemented due to the arrival of the Star section with many extra films and series. But now Disney + has implemented another price increase, which is effective immediately for new subscribers. It is not yet clear if and when existing subscribers will pay the new price.

Disney+ price increase 2023

The monthly price for a new Disney+ subscription is now €9.99 per month. That is a price increase of €1, or 11%. The price for an annual subscription has also increased: from €89.90 per year to €99.90 per year, also an 11% increase. The new prices therefore only apply to new subscribers at the moment. If you have already subscribed for €8.99 per month (or €89.90 per year), nothing will change at this time.

It is expected that current subscribers will eventually pay the new price. With an annual subscription, this will only start at the earliest when the current subscription is about to expire. By law, users must be notified at least one month in advance. Many Apple users who subscribe to Disney+ pay for it directly through their Apple ID. With the previous Disney+ price increase, it took several months for the price to increase for this group of users. When the time comes, you will automatically receive an email from Apple about the new monthly price. At the moment there is no question of a price increase for current viewers for the coming month.

In the US, Disney + added a second subscription form in December. Users who were already subscribed now saw ads for the same price. A more expensive membership was then replaced, so that you could still watch without commercials. It is not clear when the Disney+ commercials will come to the Netherlands.

After Netflix, Disney+ now also has a subscription with ads. It's called Disney+ Basic. You will not only see commercials, but there are also some restrictions.

Viaplay and more have also become more expensive

Disney+ isn't the only streaming service to raise prices recently. At Viaplay, new subscribers now pay a price of €15.99 per month. This used to be €13.99 per month. An annual subscription with Viaplay will only become more expensive from March 2, 2023 (from €10.49 per month to €12.79 per month, but you pay a year in advance). And last fall, Apple also raised the prices of Apple TV + and Apple Music. Prices there went up by €1 to €3 per month.
