The action RPG Risen by Piranha Bytes was released in October 2009 and has so far only served the PC and the Xbox 360. But next year, more than 13 years later, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One further game consoles will be ported.

The publisher THQ Nordic officially announced this today. Accordingly, Risen will be released on January 24, 2023 on the Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft platforms, which are no longer quite so fresh.

“The cult role-playing game, which follows the game design direction of early Gothic games, will finally run smoothly and in full quality on console platforms, while the old PC version will receive a gamepad support update,” it continues. So an update of the PC version is also in prospect.

On the On the game's homepage, the new version for game consoles is described as follows:

  • Remastered version of the cult role-playing game with full gamepad controls and an overhauled user interface
  • Divided into 4 chapters where you can decide which site to join
  • 30 different spells to choose from, cast by either scrolls or runes
  • Fully seamless world streaming – no loading screens
  • Over 60 hours of immersive open world gameplay
  • li>Open world action RPG where every action has consequences
  • With each level your character learns and improves their skills
  • Countless side quests and creatures to discover

Risen has been praised by gaming magazines for its atmospheric game world with believable character development. However, the version for the Xbox 360 received a lot of criticism due to technical problems, to which the “finally smooth and in full quality on console platforms” from the announcement should now refer.

THQ Nordic completely took over the German developer studio Piranha Bytes, which is known for Elex, Gothic and Risen, in May 2019. In March of this year, Elex 2 (test) was the first title to appear under the new owner.
