Sony's customizable pro controller, the DualSense Edge, will be released on January 26, 2023 for the PlayStation 5 (test) and is already receiving official support for operating systems based on the free system kernel Linux. The new Pro-Controller follows the regular DualSense, which has been Linux-compatible since the end of 2020.

In December 2020, Sony surprisingly released an official open source driver for the DualSense controller, which can also be used on the Steam gaming platform under Linux, for example.

  • This month sent out a patch adding initial support for the DualSense Edge controller with so far just adding the new device IDs.
  • That basic support patch is now queued in the HID subsystem's “for-next” branch ahead of the Linux 6.2 merge window opening in December.
  • There isn't yet support for the various new features around reprogrammable buttons and other customizations.

Functional scope still limited at the beginning

The controller can be used under Linux both via USB and Bluetooth, the driver also supports the touchpads, vibration mode and LEDs. Only the adaptive triggers and the customizable buttons are not yet available. The driver is intended for use with Linux 6.2.

Support for Steam with Wine, Proton and Vulkan

In addition to native Linux games, the DualSense can also be used to play games designed for Windows using Wine, Proton and the low-level graphics API Vulkan via Steam. In addition, it also lays the foundations for use under Chrome OS and Android, which are based on Linux.
