After the M1 processor from the Mac and not the “A14X” replaced the A14 Bionic in the 2021 product update in the iPad Pro 11" and 12.9″ Apple's latest “desktop SoC”, the M2 processor, is now once again taking the place of the two new iPad Pros. The mini LED display is still reserved for the large model.

Pro models get new Apple silicon

After the iPad Air 5 (test) also switched to the M1 processor and thus the iPad Pro (test) moved properly on the pellicle, Apple with the product update 2022 and the upgrade to the M2 puts the distance between its own middle class and the two Pro models positioned above it.

Higher efficiency thanks to the M2 processor

Thanks to the new M2 SoC with its upgraded memory interface, the new tablets should offer more performance with the same consumption. Like the M1, the M2 also relies on an 8-core ARM CPU with four high-performance and four high-efficiency cores. All in all, the M2 should be 18 percent faster than its predecessor with the same consumption of 15 watts and deliver up to 35 percent more GPU power.

Wi-Fi 6E and the floating Apple Pencil

On the hardware side, there is also both wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi 6E and the new hover function for the Apple Pencil implemented via iPadOS 16, which is now recognized up to 12 millimeters above the display. This allows users to preview their marking before making it.

Although the feature is part of iPadOS 16, it is still exclusive to the M2 processor , iPads with M1 SoC cannot use the floating Apple Pencil.
