Google Nest Wifi Pro
There were rumors that the iPhone 14 would support WiFi 6E, but it never materialized. Instead, we have ‘regular WiFi 6’ for which you need a special router to make the most of it. Google has long been missing from the list of WiFi 6 routers, but is now making a double leap forward: there is also support for the successor WiFi 6E.
After three years, Google has updated the mesh routers and the result is this Google Nest Wifi Pro. Not only are they faster, they also look very different from the previous model from 2019. They are shiny colored balls in the colors Snow, Linen, Fog and Lemongrass. And it's all there: Nest Wifi Pro doubles as a Thread border router, so all your Thread devices can connect to it. The HomePod could already be used as a Thread border router.

And now that Matter 1.0 has officially launched, you'll soon be able to use your Nest Wifi Pro router as a Matter hub. With this you can connect all your Matter-enabled accessories, including the Eve accessories that could previously only be controlled with HomeKit. This makes it easier to manage your accessories and add devices to your smart home. Because Matter 1.0 was officially launched on Tuesday, this is not immediately possible. But it's nice that it's coming.
Google Nest Wifi Pro: more stable and faster
The new Nest routers operate on three frequency bands: 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz. The latter, in particular, has a wider bandwidth than the current frequencies, resulting in a higher speed and less interference. For devices that do not yet support WiFi 6E, the Nest Wifi Pro ensures that you can use WiFi 5. The router constantly analyzes network performance and optimizes the connection, Google promises. Priority is also given to activities that require higher bandwidth, such as video calling and streaming. If there are connection problems, the renewed Google Home app will report this and immediately provide solutions to fix it.
The previous Nest Wifi router with WiFi 5 supported speeds up to 2.2 Gbps while this new one now has a combined speed of up to 4.2 Gbps. It has two built-in two 1 GB ports per router for wired connections. One router covers a space of 120 square meters, according to Google. Exact coverage depends on obstacles such as partition walls.
Simplified installation
Setting up these new routers should also be a lot easier, thanks to step-by-step instructions in the Google Home app. You can also do a speed test, create guest networks and share passwords with the app. The router has some security features, such as blocking content from your children and notifying you if a strange device has logged in. Google regularly provides the Nest Wifi Pro with automatic performance and security updates. Parents can assign devices to specific family members in the Google Home app and then interrupt the Wi-Fi connection for those devices at any time.
Availability Google Nest Wifi Pro
The Nest Wifi Pro goes on sale on October 27. You can already place a pre-order via the Google Store and they will also be available at other stores from that moment on. There are four shimmery colors: Snow, Linen, Fog and Lemongrass. In fact, these are two shades of white, one blue and one yellow). It seems that in the Netherlands only the color Snow (Snow) will be offered and that's fine, because this is the most neutral color.
It is for sale in the Netherlands from 219.99 euros each and 329.99 euros for a set of two. Expansion with a Wifi Point is no longer necessary with this new generation; you can place an extra Wifi Router for this. If you have a small house, a single router will suffice.
And there's more to look forward to: later this week, Google will host a major event where the Pixel 7 smartphone will be officially unveiled. In addition, Google will launch a Pixel smartwatch.
