By the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU must have a USB-C connector. From the spring of 2026, this also applies to laptops.

The new law was adopted by the European Parliament on Tuesday with 602 votes in favor, 13 votes against and 8 abstentions.

According to the new rules consumers will no longer need a new charger every time they buy a new one, as they will be able to use a single charger for a large number of small and medium-sized portable electronic devices.

Regardless of manufacturer, all new cell phones, tablets, digital cameras must , headphones and headsets, handheld video game consoles and portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, earphones and laptops that are rechargeable by wired cable, with a power supply of up to 100 watts, are equipped with a USB-C connector .

All devices that support fast charging will now have the same charging speed, allowing users to charge their devices equally quickly with any compatible charger.

The new requirements should lead to major reuse of chargers and mean that consumers save up to 250 million euros every year on unnecessary new chargers. Discarded and unused chargers account for approximately 11,000 tonnes of electronic waste annually in the EU.
