GeForce RTX 4000 “FE”: Three graphics cards, two names and only one design

Nvidia's new GPU generation, named after Ada Lovelace, is launched with three GeForce models. The RTX 4090 and the RTX 4080, with the 4080 being available in two very different variants. The new Founders Edition cooler design from Nvidia is shared by two of them and one is only available in the custom design of the partners.

Even if Nvidia has mainly illustrated the flagship RTX 4090, there are indications that the RTX 4080 in the large version with 16 GB and more computing power as the so-called Founders Edition will also get the same cooler. Because Nvidia states a length of 30.4 cm, a width of 13.7 cm and a height and depth of 6.1 cm for both graphics cards. The cooler thus occupies three PCIe slots in the system.

At the rear is an axial fan with a large diameter of approximately 130 mm. Since Nvidia remains true to the cooler concept used in the predecessors, there is another fan on the other side in the front part.

It cannot be ruled out that the cooler is under the hood differs, even in the past supposedly identical coolers at Nvidia had not turned out to be completely identical – keyword vapor chamber instead of classic base plate.

The RTX 4080 12 GB only as a custom design

For the RTX 4080 with 12 GB and the least computing power, Nvidia does not make any binding statements about the dimensions and instead writes that these “vary depending on the manufacturer”. This makes it clear that no Founders Edition is provided here. Instead, this version will only be available in the individual designs of the numerous graphics card manufacturers.

In terms of power connections, the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 16 GB also do not differ, despite the large difference in power consumption. For both, Nvidia has provided the modern 12+4-pin socket (12VHPWR according to PCIe 5.0) for up to 450 watts – the plug theoretically allows up to 600 watts. Alternatively, three standard 8-pin connectors can be used with the supplied adapter. With the RTX 4080 12 GB, however, two 8-pin connectors are sufficient.

When it comes to the video outputs and their standards, there is agreement and at the same time stagnation. Like the predecessors, the RTX 4090 also offer three DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.1. The new DisplayPort 2.0 is not yet available. This also applies to the PCIe connector, which stays with PCIe 4.0.
