Mercedes Truck is not only working on 100% electric trucks like the new eActros LongHaul we talked about recently , but also on models equipped with Fuel Cell technology . Hydrogen, in fact, is seen with interest by the manufacturers of heavy vehicles since it allows to create models with long ranges. Therefore, the range of vehicles of the German manufacturer will be; integrated, in the second half & agrave; of the decade, from models based on hydrogen-based fuel cell propulsion system.

At the IAA Transportation 2022 in Hanover , Mercedes Truck will offer & agrave; an anticipation of the future GenH2 Truck hydrogen vehicle.

TESTS GI? IN PROGRESS

The German brand reminds us that already & agrave; since last year & egrave; the Mercedes GenH2 Truck prototype undergoes intensive testing, both on the company's test track and on public roads.

For the development of hydrogen-based propulsion systems, Mercedes Trucks prefers liquid hydrogen (LH2). In this state of aggregation, this energy vector has a density; significantly higher energy in relation to the volume, compared to hydrogen gas. Consequently, & egrave; possible to carry more hydrogen, which significantly increases the autonomy and therefore allows the vehicle to offer performance comparable to that of a conventional diesel truck.

The objective of the German manufacturer is; to achieve a vehicle capable of have a range of over 1,000 km . L & rsquo; beginning of series production & egrave; expected for the second half & agrave; of the decade. The brand also shared some details of this model equipped with Fuel Cell technology.

In its standard variant, the GenH2 Truck will offer; a payload of 25 tons with a total weight of 40 tons. There will also be two liquid hydrogen tanks and a & quot; particularly powerful & quot; fuel cell system. that will make this high payload and high autonomy possible.

The two liquid hydrogen tanks in stainless steel provided for the standard version of the GenH2 Truck will have a capacity; 80 kg (40 kg each). The stainless steel tank system & egrave; consisting of two pipes, one inside the other, connected to each other and vacuum insulated.

From a technical point of view, Mercedes Truck explains that the Fuel Cell system delivers 300 kW (2 X 150 kW). Furthermore, & egrave; there is a 70 kWh battery with a power of up to 400 kW. The accumulator does not have a large capacity as it is used to support fuel cells at specific times such as when more power is required from the engines.

In the pre-series version, the two electric motors are designed in total for a continuous power of 2 x 230 kW and a maximum power of 2 x 330 kW. The couple & egrave; equal, respectively, to 2 x 1577 Nm and 2 x 2071 Nm.

In parallel, Mercedes-Benz is working with Linde on the development of a new method of refueling for hydrogen liquid : this is the & quot; sLH2 technology & quot ;. The companies are planning the first refueling of a prototype truck, which will take place; in 2023 in a German pilot station.
