Privacy update for WhatsApp: 3 improvements

WhatsApp has all kinds of ways to preserve your privacy, but still some options were missing. In particular, the lack of hiding your online status was a thorn in the side for many users. Earlier it appeared that WhatsApp was working on hiding your online status, but now this feature has been officially announced. Along with two other new privacy features that will soon be available to everyone in a WhatsApp update, Mark Zuckerberg himself announced today.

#1 Hide online status

WhatsApp always shows whether you are online or not, which means whether you currently have WhatsApp open on your phone or computer. This can sometimes lead to crooked faces, for example if someone sends you a message but you don't feel like answering. They can then see that you are online. He or she may then conclude that you are ignoring the new message for whatever reason. From this month you can choose who can see your online status, as we wrote earlier. By default, this is Everyone, but you can also change the setting to the same options as your last seen status. There you can also indicate that no one is allowed to see it. In that case, it will also affect your online status.

#2 Leaving a group conversation unseen (almost)

Back in May, we wrote that WhatsApp was testing a new group chat feature. In the beta you could quietly leave a WhatsApp group, without everyone getting a notification. Only group admins will get another warning if someone leaves the chat. This improvement will also be rolled out to everyone this month.

#3 No more screenshots of one-off photos and videos

Since about a year you can send one-time photos and videos in WhatsApp, which can only be opened and viewed once. But it was still possible to make a screenshot of this. WhatsApp is now going to put a stop to this and block the taking of screenshots of such photos and videos. As soon as you take a screenshot of a one-time photo or video, you will see a warning that it will be blocked. Of course, someone can always take a picture of the device on which the message comes in with another device, so keep that in mind. At least it's now made a little more difficult to capture one-time photos forever. This feature will soon be tested in beta and will be available to everyone at a later date, although it is not yet clear when exactly.
