Weekly review and outlook: The gaming smartphone with all sorts of crazy accessories

Smartphones are a dime a dozen, but very few stand out like the Asus ROG Phone 6. The gaming smartphone is one of the first devices to rely on the faster and more efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, sophisticated cooling and all sorts of sometimes crazy accessories such as an external fan.

The category of gaming smartphones doesn't exactly have it easy on the market, given the fact that most devices rely on the same Qualcomm chip, practically every high-end smartphone is also a gaming smartphone. Asus is therefore using the ROG Phone 6 (Pro) (test) on the latest expansion stage from Qualcomm, which thanks to the production in N4 at TSMC works faster and more efficiently than the basic model, as the chip benchmarks underpin, but is also dedicated to other players .

More performance with active cooling

The design of the smartphone screams gaming, as there is RGB lighting and the Pro model also has an OLED display on the back. In addition, the ROG Phone offers 6 shoulder buttons in the frame and effective cooling, which successfully delayed throttling in the test. There is even more power in X-Mode and X-Mode+, which can be used in combination with the external active fan, which also unlocks additional power modes using a Peltier element. In addition, the smartphone can be expanded into a kind of Nintendo Switch with Android via a special case and attachable controllers in the style of the Joy-Cons.

The ROG Phone 6 is not a perfect smartphone, but serves its niche perfectly and therefore still deserves a recommendation from the editors for gamers.
