Hands-on reviews and experiences M2 MacBook Pro

After pre-ordering the M2 MacBook Pro last Friday and the upcoming release this week, it is now time for the first experiences. In the past week, various media were able to get started with the latest entry-level MacBook Pro. Apple announced this model during WWDC 2022 and has the new M2 chip as the biggest (and almost only) innovation. How big is this difference and does it make the M2 MacBook Pro worth it?

Just to warn you: many reviews have the same meaning. You only buy this model for the M2 chip and not for the other limited improvements, but at the same time the MacBook Air is lurking. As you could read earlier in our comparison of the M2 MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro, it's the better choice in many ways.

Review M2 MacBook Pro 2022 from The Verge

The Verge calls this model a 2022 chip in a 2016 computer. But that doesn't mean it's the best choice for professional users, despite the model's name suggesting otherwise. The M2 chip is well beaten in the benchmarks by the M1 Pro chip of the more advanced 2021 models of the MacBook Pro. It is therefore difficult to determine for whom this new entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro is intended, writes The Verge. This MacBook Pro is for anyone who occasionally needs to do some things in Photoshop or Lightroom, but not all day long. But for those people, the MacBook Air with M2 chip also comes into play. All in all, the M2 chip is impressive. The other plus points, according to The Verge, are the long battery life. But the site's advice is to wait a little longer for the Macbook Air.

Review M2 MacBook Pro 2022 from TechCrunch

TechCrunch also writes that there are few reasons to choose this entry-level MacBook Pro over the upcoming MacBook Air. They advise opting for the equally powerful new M2 MacBook Air or the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro/Max chip from 2021. But this 2022 MacBook Pro with 13-inch screen is still not a bad laptop. The chip improvements are nice and you will notice the difference with the M1 immediately. Still, the feeling remains that this entry-level MacBook Pro feels a bit redundant. TechCrunch also makes a comment about the quality of the camera, because it lags considerably behind the other models at 720p.

Wired goes hands-on with M2 MacBook Pro

Wired calls the 2022 M2 MacBook Pro a great laptop, but at the same time finds it a bit boring and lacking in points. This is mainly due to the same design as in the 2016 model, the 720p camera and the lack of MagSafe. At the same time, the reviewer also calls the Touch Bar a downside, because he would have preferred the physical function keys. A disadvantage of the M2 chip is that only one external screen can be connected. All in all, Wired calls this model a tough sell, mainly due to the upcoming MacBook Air.

Review M2 MacBook Pro from Engadget

h3>

The only pro about the new MacBook Pro, according to Engadget, is the name. It feels as if Apple had to build a machine around the M2 chip with this MacBook, instead of the computer itself being modified and optimized for the chip itself. That is not surprising: it is almost the same computer as in 2020, but only with a new M2 chip. This reviewer is also impressed by the M2 chip and the battery life, but still finds it a disappointment that there is no ProMotion screen, the screen edges are wide and there are only two USB-C ports. The Touch Bar is also not a plus for him. It feels as if Apple has missed opportunities, so is the conclusion of this review. Despite that, it is a nice laptop, but there could have been so much more in it.

Tweakers review of M2 MacBook Pro

Our colleagues from Tweakers have also written a review of the M2 MacBook Pro 2022. They mention the sturdy housing as a plus, just like the quality of the screen with the high brightness. The M2 performs better in the tests than the M1, but Tweakers does not call the performance as impressive as when the M1 was introduced. The MacBook Pro has an active cooling, but according to the reviewer it is very quiet. Other downsides that are noted are the low specs of the entry-level model and the high additional cost for upgrades for RAM and storage. Also the dated design and the lack of MagSafe are mentioned.
