At 20, the seven-time Grammy winner is more than just an exceptional musical talent. Ten facts about the extraordinary artist.
When it comes to Generation Z, there is no way around Billie Eilish. At the age of 20, the American singer sets one record after the other and sets new standards for up-and-coming pop singers. The impact she has on young people is hard to overestimate.
In February, Billie Eilish started her “Happier Than Ever” world tour (named after the album of the same name that was released in 2021), with which she is now coming to Germany for three concerts. Time to find out what makes Billie Eilish so extraordinary:
1. She doesn't care about music genres
Once upon a time, genre was an important means of organizing music. But ever since streaming services like Spotify sorted their music in automatically compiled playlists according to mood, genres seem outdated. At least that's how Billie Eilish sees it: “The genre is not dead, but it should die,” she said in a 2019 interview with Der Spiegel. She throws pop, trap, emo, alternative – or like in the song “Billie Bossa Nova” Brazilian sounds – together. And yet you always recognize Eilish. On the one hand, the whispered singing, her trademark. On the other hand, the dark, melancholic lyrics, with which not only young people all over the world identify.
2. She speaks out against body shaming
As a teenager, the baggy look became her trademark and a fashion trend. But in 2021 Eilish underwent an image change and appeared on the cover of Vogue in an Alexander McQueen corsage. “My body was the root cause of my depression when I was younger,” she told Vogue.

In the past, the singer has been the target of online hate comments criticizing her body. In response, she posted a video titled “Not My Responsibility” on YouTube. In it, she takes off one piece of clothing and criticizes the fact that strangers – mostly men – judge their bodies without being asked: “Even though you've never seen my body, you still judge it and judge me for it. Why?”
3. She sets standards in the fashion world
The vegan singer is an animal rights activist and launched a vegan Air Jordan footwear collection with Nike in 2021. Her own perfume is also vegan. At the Met Gala in September 2021, she wore an extravagant dress by designer brand Oscar de la Renta – provided that the brand would eliminate animal fur from the range.

4. As the youngest artist, she won all Grammys in the main categories
At the 2020 Grammy Awards, Billie Eilish made pop music history by becoming the youngest person to win in all major categories. She won Best New Artist and received Record of the Year and Song of the Year awards for her song “Bad Guy.” For her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? she scooped the “Album of the Year” award.
She is the second person to have achieved this foursome – before that, only the American singer-songwriter Christopher Cross managed this feat in 1981. In the category “Album of the Year” Billie Eilish is the youngest recipient in the history of the award.
5. She became famous via Soundcloud
She was one of the first to demonstrate how to become famous on the internet. In 2015, the then not quite 14-year-old uploaded her song “Ocean Eyes” to the online music service Soundcloud – originally as a song for a dance rehearsal . But then the song was clicked and shared millions of times. As a result, the label Interscope Records became aware of Billie Eilish and signed her and her brother Finneas. The rest is history.
6. She produces her songs with brother Finneas
Finneas O'Connor is not only Billie Eilish's older brother, but also the producer and co-writer of her songs. The siblings grew up in a family of artists in Los Angeles and were homeschooled. They produced their first songs together in their children's room, including “Ocean Eyes”. Eilish along with her brother Finneas and Bond actors Daniel Craig and Rami Malek
7. She is the youngest artist to sing a Bond theme song
It was an important milestone for Billie Eilish when she – the youngest artist ever – was commissioned to write the theme song for the recent James Bond film “No Time To Die”.
For the so-called Generation Z, who don't flock to James Bond films, other musical guest appearances are arguably more relevant. Eilish's song “Bored” was featured on the soundtrack of the teen drama series Dead Girls Don't Lie. The song “Lo Vas a Olvidar” she recorded with Spanish singer Rosalía became the soundtrack of the hyped HBO series Euphoria.
8. She uses her Instagram reach for serious topics
Almost 100 million people follow Billie Eilish on Instagram. Eilish uses that influence to address issues that are important to her. When the black American George Floyd was killed by police violence, she got upset in a post with the hashtag #blacklivesmatter that some people didn't understand that black people often had it harder than white people because of racism – and demanded that the case of George Floyd should therefore be dealt with.
She recently shared on Instagram a link to the documentary she was a part of, “They're Trying To Kill Us,” which explores the connection between racism and diet.
9. She is open about her illness
In 2018, the singer revealed on Instagram that she had Tourette Syndrome after videos of her tics were compiled and uploaded to YouTube. The tics of Billie Eilish are physical, verbal tics do not occur. In a 2019 interview with Ellen DeGeneres, she said, “It's something I've lived with my whole life. I just never wanted it to define me.” When she went public with her diagnosis, she did notes that many fans also live with Tourette and this creates a bond.
With that, she went down in history: In 2020, Billie Eilish won Grammys in all four main categories
10. She wants to combine a world tour and environmental protection
Billie Eilish is publicly committed to climate protection – for example at the Global Citizen Live concert series, which collected money for the fight against climate change, poverty and the consequences of the pandemic. She also deals with the climate crisis in her songs, as the music video for “All The Good Girls Go To Hell” shows.
Her world tour should also be green – even if this seems impossible simply because of the many flights. Eilish wants to achieve a more sustainable tour by banning plastic straws and allowing fans to bring their own water bottles. Whether that works everywhere or not – the fans in Germany can certainly look forward to seeing Eilish live again after a two-year Corona break.
