MSI MEG 342C: QD OLED monitor goes hunting for aliens at 175 Hz

Dell released the Alienware AW3423DW, the first gaming monitor with a QD OLED panel from Samsung. MSI announces a counterpart for Computex: The MEG 342C QD-OLED Curved Gaming Monitor also offers 175 Hz and 0.1 ms in 21:9 format.

MSI should emulate the first QD OLED monitor

Even if the scarce information so far does not directly confirm it, it can be assumed that the MSI monitor uses the same QD-OLED panel as the AW3423DW model (test) from Dell. This means that 3,440 × 1,440 pixels would be available on a 34-inch diagonal. The radius of curvature (1800R), the refresh rate (175 Hz) and the response time (0.1 ms) match the key data of the Alienware AW3423DW exactly. It would therefore not be surprising if the advantages and disadvantages of the new monitor technology at MSI were similar.

The Alienware monitor has impressively demonstrated the advantages of high contrast with true black and faster response times compared to LCD monitors. Furthermore, the combination with Quantum Dot technology promises a huge color spectrum, which MSI underlines with “99.3% DCI-P3, 97.8% Adobe RGB and 139.1% sRGB”.

However, the problem areas such as the pixel structure of the QD-OLED panel, which causes colorful color fringes, are also to be expected for the MSI monitor. It remains to be seen whether MSI will also install a G-Sync module. With the Dell monitor, this creates an unpleasant background noise due to the built-in fan.

Small information, small pictures

A Computex website provides at least initial, albeit pixelated, image material for the MEG 342C QD-OLED. This will therefore have a black case with gold accents. According to the brief description, there will be RGB lighting for the front and MSI's exclusive “Gaming Intelligence”. The latter includes an integrated processor for “smart” functions such as “Sound Tune, Optix Scope, Smart Crosshair” and remote control via smartphone.

TFT Central also reports an ambient light sensor and a KVM function.

Not surprisingly, given the sparse information base, it too Pricing and availability of the MEG 342C QD-OLED is not yet available.
