With a recommended retail price of 149 euros, the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 are the cheapest, smallest and lightest Galaxy Buds from the manufacturer to date, but still offer dynamic two-way speakers, ANC, transparency mode, wireless charging and auto-play/auto-pause many functions.

The Galaxy Buds 2 will be available parallel to the Galaxy Buds Live (test) and the Galaxy Buds Pro (test), while the Galaxy Buds + (test) should gradually disappear from the market.

The Galaxy Buds 2 have been available in the four colors Graphite, White, Olive and Lavender since the end of August. The olive color variant is used in the test. In addition to the earphones and the charging case, buyers receive a USB-C to USB-A charging cable, three pairs of silicone attachments in different sizes and a quick start guide.

BT 5.2 with AAC, SSC and IPX2

For the radio connection, the new wireless in-ear headphones use Bluetooth 5.2, for the codecs SBC, AAC and Samsung's own SSC. The manufacturer does not provide details on sensitivity, sound pressure level or frequency response. The Galaxy Buds 2 are protected against moisture according to IPX2, which is only protection against falling dripping water. Especially in comparison to the Galaxy Buds Pro, which are certified according to IPX7, this is a clear step backwards.

The smallest and lightest Galaxy Buds

As mentioned, the Galaxy Buds 2 are the smallest headphones from Samsung to date, and at 5.0 g per earbud, they are lightest. You rely on the classic earbud shape, in which no stem protrudes from the ear, but small buttons barely protrude from the ear. Silicone attachments, which are supplied in three sizes, are used to seal the ear canal. In the Galaxy Wearable app, users can perform an “Earbud Fit Test” to check the fit.

With dimensions of 50.0 × 50.2 × 27.8 mm and features, the charging case of the Galaxy Buds 2 is identical to the copy of the Galaxy Buds Pro. So it is not only pleasantly small, so that it can be carried in your pocket without any problems, but is also light at 41.2 g. It also offers wireless charging based on the Qi standard. Alternatively, the case can be charged via USB-C. The battery capacity of the charging case is 472 mAh, the battery in the earphones has a capacity of 61 mAh. Despite the smaller dimensions and lower weight of the Galaxy Buds 2 and Galaxy Buds Pro, these values are also identical.

The earphones are magnetically fixed in the charging case and do not fall out even upside down. They are also easy to remove because they protrude far enough.

ANC and variable Transparency mode

The Galaxy Buds 2 offer active noise cancellation and a variable transparency mode that allows users to perceive ambient noise while wearing the earphones. The transparency mode is variable insofar as users can set it in three intensity levels in order to adapt the volume of the surroundings to the respective occasion and personal preferences. Two outside and one inside microphones are used for the ANC. This is a feedforward and feedback processing that also takes into account how the sound arrives in the wearer's ear.

Samsung is also promising improvements in telephony , because a new solution based on machine learning is supposed to attenuate a large number of annoying background noises in order to improve speech quality. The Buds 2 will have to prove their performance in all three areas in the course of the test.

7.5 h without, 5 h with ANC

Samsung specifies the battery life of the earphones with up to 7.5 hours without ANC. In conjunction with the charging case, it is up to 29 hours. If ANC is used, the battery life of the earphones is reduced to 5 hours. A quick charge function provides enough power for another hour of music playback after 5 minutes.

In practice, the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 reached 4:50 hours with permanently activated ANC, medium volume and a broad music mix. A battery life that is usually unproblematic in everyday life, but it does not stand out from the competition, but is only average.

Auto switch with Galaxy devices

In connection with Samsung's own Galaxy devices, the Galaxy Buds 2 also support “Auto Switch”, ie automatic switching to the device that is currently being used without the user having to change the Bluetooth connection himself. To do this, the Galaxy devices must be registered with the same Samsung account. The Galaxy Watch 4 is also capable of “Quick Buds Control”, with which the active noise suppression can be switched on or off via the watch and the battery level can be checked.

However, the Galaxy Buds do not support “Bluetooth Multipoint” with other devices. However, a connection can be initiated from a known device without the user having to first disconnect an active connection with another device.

With Google Fast Pair, The Galaxy Buds 2 cannot bypass it either, so that when the charging case is opened, a message about pairing on an Android smartphone is displayed.

Control by touch and sensor

The Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 have a proximity sensor in each earbud that automatically pauses and resumes playback when an earbud is removed and reinserted. Using the touch control, playback can be started and paused, skipped through tracks, calls accepted and rejected and the volume regulated.

A single tap starts and pauses playback, touching and Hold, however, toggles between ANC and transparency mode. From the factory, double and triple taps are not activated, but this can be changed in the Galaxy Wearable app for Android and is then used to jump back and forth through titles.

Restricted adjustments in the app

The control can also be adjusted to a limited extent via this app. Restricted, as not every gesture can be assigned anew and not every function can be freely assigned. Instead, only “touch and hold” can be adjusted. In addition to the ANC control, it is possible to choose to call up the voice assistant and Spotify or the volume control. If the latter is selected, both earphones are always adjusted (louder and quieter), while the other functions can be freely combined. With the noise control, you can also choose between which modes the earphones should be switched through. Thereby “ANC & lt; – & gt; Transparency mode ”,“ ANC & lt; – & gt; Off “and” Transparency mode & lt; – & gt; Off “available. The Buds 2 do not offer a simple assignment in which you can switch between all three modes, although this appears to be the most sensible choice after the test.

The Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 do not allow all functions to be controlled via the earphones even after adjustment. Optionally, the volume control in particular falls victim to the choice of noise control.

Bad automatic pausieren

The automatic pause function has also been adopted from the Galaxy Buds Pro, although this is no reason to be pleased, because Samsung has implemented it poorly. Playback does not pause when the earphones are removed from the ear. It also only pauses on the Buds 2 when both earbuds are removed from the ear at the same time or one after the other. If they are reinserted, one or both, playback does not start again automatically – the earphones remain mute. Although the Galaxy Buds 2 have the sensors and detection, Samsung uses them in one of the most unusual and least satisfying ways for users.

Fewer incorrect entries, but incorrect entries

On the other hand, the recognition is better than with the Galaxy Buds Pro implemented by inputs that are less sensitive, so that adjusting the earphones in the ear does not always trigger an input unintentionally. However, incorrect entries cannot be completely prevented, which can lead to unintentional activation of the ANC or the transparency mode.

Very good single use

Both earphones of the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 can be used individually without any problems. A disruptive interruption of playback does not occur when switching from stereo to mono or vice versa.

The Galaxy Wearable App for Android

As already mentioned, the Galaxy Buds 2 can also be connected to the Galaxy Wearable app. However, this is still only available for Android smartphones. If you want to use an iPhone or iPad in connection with Samsung's new wireless in-ears, you have to forego any possibility of adaptation and firmware updates.

In the app, the charge status of the earphones and the charging case is displayed again and in addition to the above-mentioned, limited adjustment of the control, the ANC and the transparency mode can be activated. The latter can also be adjusted in three stages. Unlike the Galaxy Buds Pro, the ANC is not adjustable via the app. One of the presets “Normal”, “Bass Boost”, “Soft”, “Dynamic”, “Clear” and “Treble Boost” can be selected via an equalizer. Manual adjustment is still not possible. The pass test integrated in the app plays brief tones to check the sealing of the earphones.

The Galaxy Buds 2 also have a function to read notifications. If desired, the touch control via the earphones can be completely deactivated in the app. It is also possible to beep the misplaced earphones. In addition, the quick switch between devices can be switched off if desired.

In addition to the lack of the app for iOS, the criticism already mentioned with the Galaxy Buds Pro remains that the app offers good functions, but is too limited in depth.

Very comfortable to wear

The Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 sit very well in the tester's ear and stick out pleasantly little, so that they can also be worn in conjunction with hats and bicycle helmets. Fit and hold are better than with the Galaxy Buds Pro, as the shape of the Buds 2 hugs the ear better, which gives the earphones additional support. Normal sporting activities could be carried out without any problems without the earphones falling out – another plus point compared to the Buds Pro.
