French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has launched a procedure to ban the Ligue de Défense Noire Africaine, which has been singled out as a racist organization that promotes “hatred and discrimination”.

The announcement comes after the group was accused of being involved in violence.

The group describes itself on Facebook as a “revolutionary movement in defense of Afro descendants and the rights of Africans”. Nearly 300,000 people follow the organization on the Facebook page.

Over the weekend, members of the group were involved in a demonstration in Val-de-Reuil, Normandy. Videos shared online state members of the group are seen harassing public officials and occupying City Hall. Clashes were also reported between Kurdish and African groups in the city.

However, the African organization denies that violence was used by its members.

The group now has 15 days to appeal the Interior Minister decision. If the organization chooses not to appeal the decision, President Emmanuel Macron can simply ban it. In an appeal, the French Prime Minister will decide the matter.

Earlier this year, Macron's government banned the right-wing group Génération Identitaire and the Turkish organization Gray Wolves.
