The machine, which is called “Orca” after the Icelandic word for energy, will be launched last week.

The inauguration was attended by Icelandic President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, who gave a fire speech about the “climate” .

Climeworks, which has built the marvel, states that the machine can absorb 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the air every year. This corresponds to the emissions from 870 cars.

The machine sucks up the air through a filter that captures the carbon dioxide, which is then pushed down 1,000 meters underground to be mineralized.

The cost of building the machine was equivalent to about SEK 100 million, according to Bloomberg.
