3DMark: Now with a test of DX12 Ultimate Sampler Feedback

UL extends the 3DMark from time to time. The feature tests in particular have grown recently, with DirectX 12 Ultimate being the focus. For example, there is now a separate test for ray tracing and mesh shaders. And now a new test has been added that takes care of sampler feedback.

With Sampler Feedback, Microsoft has set itself the goal of enabling developers to use texture streaming and shading more effectively than before. The feature allows the engine to receive more information for more effective rendering, so that, for example, unnecessarily detailed mip-map levels are not used or shader results from previous frames can be used if new ones are not required. Not surprisingly, this saves computing power and brings corresponding performance. More technical details on sampler feedback can be found in Microsoft's developer blog about DirectX 12 Ultimate.

In addition to benchmarks, there are also comparisons of images

To test sampler feedback, UL has developed a new sequence showing a robot repair shop. The benchmark shows a camera flight through the shop, whereby two different series of measurements are made. One uses conventional methods for shader feedback, the other uses sampler feedback. Each run then receives its own FPS result, which is compared with each other and should show the performance advantage of the DirectX 12 Ultimate feature.

In addition, there is also an interactive mode that can be paused if desired. Sampler feedback can then be switched on and off manually, and 3DMark also creates comparison screenshots so that the optical results can be compared directly with one another.

ComputerBase did this once and took a look at the actual graphics as well as the visualization feature, with which it is possible to quickly determine which objects Sampler Feedback is working on. And the screenshots show that with sampler feedback, objects show fewer details in places, while others look more or less identical. It remains to be seen whether the observation will also apply to games with the DirectX 12 Ultimate feature.

In terms of performance plus, the tested GeForce RTX 3080 and Radeon RX 6800 XT are on par. Sampler Feedback accelerates the test sequence in 3DMark exactly the same on both graphics cards, an additional 6 percent of FPS can be measured.

3DMark Advanced is necessary

The new sampler feedback test can be run with any graphics card that supports DirectX 12 Ultimate; Windows 10 version 2004 or newer is also required. This is not supported in the free version of the benchmark; the paid 3DMark Advanced Edition or 3DMark Professional Edition is required for this.

Readers who have one of the two versions can use the following form to send in their test results, stating the graphics card. Your own system should be named in accordance with the editorial scheme (see above). For two results with “Sampler feedback on” and “Sampler feedback off”, the form must be sent separately.

How does it work here? You publish your results as a forum post. In order to make our work easier, the data intended for the diagram must have a certain format. For this purpose, this form creates a forum post, which you send with additional screenshots and details (please do not change the generated part!).

1. Your system

Use the same formatting like already existing diagram entries (and note the information in the text if necessary). You can write details in free form in your forum post.
