Every fourth prisoner in Sweden receives halal food

P4 Kristianstad reported last week that more than half of the prisoners in Sweden eat special diets, according to information from the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.

“The assessment of whether an inmate should be served special food is made locally at each institution/prison with the support of our internal regulations”, writes the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's press secretary Mikael Ringberger in an email.

By of the 5,210 inmates found in the statistics, 1,317 – a quarter – receive adapted diets “for religious reasons”.
