It was during a party meeting on Sunday that Putin expressed concern about the civilians fleeing Afghanistan after the Taliban took power.

– Who are these refugees? How do we know that? They can be thousands, or even millions. The border is a thousand kilometers long. They will step on anything – a car, even a donkey – and flee across the steppe, the Russian president said according to RT.

This potential security threat “is a direct concern for our citizens”, Putin continued, adding: “We do not want warriors disguised as refugees to appear in our country.” Putin also explained that one of the reasons why Russia is fighting the Islamic State in Syria and has provided military support to its president Bashar al-Assad has been preventing Syria from “turning into some form of Afghanistan and becoming a breeding ground for terrorism”.

Both the Islamic State and the Taliban are classified as terrorist groups and are banned in Russia.
