Angela Merkel's visit to Moscow this week was hardly an uncomplicated story, reports Junge Freiheit.

A number of infected issues have recently strained German-Russian relations, such as the situation with the allegedly poisoned opposition politician Alexei Navalny, the Ukraine conflict and the tours around the planned natural gas pipeline Nord Stream 2.

But on Friday, the German Chancellor was able to relax by visiting the unknown soldier in the Alexander Garden in Moscow. Under great pomp and circumstance, Angela Merkel laid a wreath at the monument, which is dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who died in the fight against the Germans during World War II.
