Now that the Taliban have taken control of the province south of Kabul, President Ashraf Ghani appears in a televised speech in which he says he will not “allow the people to suffer more death and destruction in the wake of the war”. Negotiations are underway with the Taliban, according to media reports.

& ndash; “I have started extensive discussions within the government and with political leaders who represent the people of Afghanistan,” the president said in the speech. “Right now, Kabul is not under direct threat, but at the same time it is clear to everyone that the Taliban are trying to isolate the city,” said John Kirby, a spokesman for the Pentagon on Friday.
Canada has pledged to host 20,000 feminists, women in leadership positions, human rights activists and journalists from Afghanistan if the government falls.
