MINI collaborated with British designer Paul Smith to create the MINI Strip , a unique model created to emphasize the idea of sustainability; of the car manufacturer. The base is that of an electric Cooper SE. The car is been completely disassembled, reducing it to the essential. Only the elements that the designer considered absolutely necessary were then defined, implemented and assembled, putting sustainability; in the foreground. Oliver Heilmer , Head of MINI Design, commented:

To me, the MINI STRIP proves amazingly that MINI and Paul Smith share the same boldness of forward thinking in terms of innovation and design – and together we create more. Paul asked essential questions at the very beginning of the development process from his non-automotive and therefore new perspective. We are proud to have jointly developed such a statement of character. strong.

DESIGN AND SUSTAINABILITY?

The MINI Strip & egrave was conceived to be characterized by a minimal and unconventional design. In fact, some details have been chosen that make the car unique.

Raw materials are a voluntary choice of exterior design. The bodywork, in fact, is; It was left in its raw state, without the application of colored paint, but only a thin film of transparent paint to protect the car from corrosion. The manufacturing finish marks have been consciously left intact on the galvanized steel panels to clearly identify the car as a functional object and a sturdy companion for everyday life.

L & # 39; auto always features the classic contrasting black band of all MINIs but here & egrave; 3D printed using recycled plastic. Additionally, exposed screws have been used which aim to show how easily the car can be disassembled and recycled at the end of its useful life. The functional and distinctive inserts of the front and rear aprons were also produced in a 3D printing process.

The radiator grille of the MINI Strip and the wheel covers are made of recycled Perspex . Furthermore, these elements have been designed to reduce aerodynamic drag. The recycled Perspex is; was also used for the large panoramic roof. As for the interior, however, all unnecessary decorative elements have been removed. The visible base material and the tonality; of blue give the interior a particular look.

The dashboard & egrave; consisting of a & rsquo; single large semi-transparent section with a fum & eacute; glass finish. We do not find the classic central instrument, as & egrave; it was decided to leave the driver's smartphone at center stage. Smartphone that will connect automatically to the car becoming the & quot; multimedia control center & quot;, with the only physical controls that will remain used for the windows and the start-stop system.

Speaking of sustainability , & egrave; extensive use has been made of recycled and ecological materials. The interior is completely free of leather and chrome, with seats upholstered in a knitted fabric.

The fully monomaterial design for the seat covers implies complete recyclability, including the edges, allowing for circularity; some materials. The mats are made of recycled rubber. Their pattern similar to the pavement of a terrace is; a by-product of the recycling and manufacturing process and positively demonstrates how multicolored building blocks enjoy a second life as part of this material. The dashboard pad, the interior of the doors and the luggage rack shelf also show a very simplified geometry and are made of recycled cork.

The steering wheel & egrave; been reduced to the most important functions; essential. Its circle is; been wrapped with a handlebar tape in pure racing cycling style. Three aluminum spokes connect the crown to the steering wheel shock absorber, whose mesh cover allows you to see the airbag behind. As on the outside of the car, here too there are visible screws. The door panels are made of the same mesh material that covers the airbag.

There is no; no intent to bring the Strip into production, but MINI wanted to demonstrate the feasibility; to be able to create sustainable cars.
