WhatsApp now lets you automatically send disappearing photos

Since the end of 2020 you can set disappearing messages in WhatsApp. This ensures that all messages you send are deleted after seven days. A disadvantage of this function is that you cannot control how long the messages remain available, because the period of seven days cannot be changed. For photos, WhatsApp has now introduced a separate similar feature. For each photo that you send via WhatsApp, you can indicate that it automatically disappears after it has been viewed once.

WhatsApp photos disappear after opening once

The feature was previously discovered by WABetaInfo, but has now been officially announced by WhatsApp itself. In the new function you can press a button when sending a photo, so that the photo is only visible if you open it in the chat. A notification will indicate that the photo will disappear once you close it.

The feature has no built-in screenshot capture detection. By taking a screenshot of the photo, you can still capture it and keep it longer. So keep that in mind when using the function. It is not possible to export these self-destructing photos from WhatsApp to another app, for example the Photos app.

You use the function by tapping one at the bottom right when taking or selecting a photo or video in WhatsApp. You will then see a message explaining the new function. The photo or video will disappear after you fully open it in the chat. Originally, the idea was that the photo would disappear when leaving the chat.
