ING Belgium starts offering Apple Pay

In the Netherlands, ING was the very first bank to start with Apple Pay, in June 2019. In our interview with Roel Popping of ING, we asked at the time whether this would also mean that ING Belgium would also be able to do so. would soon pass. This was ‘in the long run’ in line with expectations, but since then it has been quiet for a long time. Until today, because iCulture reader Jurgen received a notification in his ING Belgium app to link his debit card to Apple Pay. It even manages to link and activate the Belgian ING debit card, but the page on the Belgian ING website still gives an error message.

ING Belgiumë will also offer Apple Pay

On the ING Belgium website no information can be found about Apple Pay yet. There is an English page about how to activate it, but that page is still blank at the time of writing. The page behind the More info button in the ING Banking app still leads to an error message.

iCulture reader Jurgen Wél has already managed to link his debit card and activate it to use Apple Pay, so behind the scenes the payment service seems to be live. The ING Banking app from ING Belgium has been supporting the Wallet app for some time now. It's not clear how long that support for Wallet has been around. Banks usually add this a few weeks before the start of Apple Pay, so that some testing can already be done. Another caveat is that ING Belgiumë is not yet in the list of Belgian banks if you want to add a new card via the settings on the iPhone (via Settings > Wallet and Apple Pay > Add card).

So it has all appearances that the bank will soon officially start with Apple Pay and that the real go-ahead is coming very soon. We made inquiries with ING Belgium. and will update this article as soon as we have more info.

New app looks more like Dutch version
ING Belgiumë has been in a transition phase for some time, with the old ING Smart Banking app being replaced by the new ING Banking app. This app is inspired by the Dutch ING Banking app, with the same design and largely the same functions.
