Naughty Romanians stole diamonds for 50 million – exchanged them for stones

Abroad. A 60-year-old Romanian woman has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for her part in a brazen coup against a luxury jeweler in London. It writes AP.

It was in March 2016 that the woman, who introduced herself as “Anna”, walked into the luxury jeweler Boodles on New Bond Street in London. She pretended to represent a wealthy Russian investor in search of precious stones and claimed to be an expert in valuing them.

“Anna” got to look at seven diamonds, worth a total of just over 50 million kronor. After looking at the diamonds, they were placed in a locked black bag which in turn was locked in the jeweler's safe waiting for payment from the Russian investor.

But when Boodle's own expert became suspicious the next day, the contents of the black bag in the safe. It was then established that it did not contain any diamonds, but seven ordinary stones. A look at the surveillance images showed that “Anna” managed to exchange the black bag, with the diamonds, for an identical black bag that did not contain any diamonds.

In September last year, 60-year-old Lulu Lakatos, the woman, was arrested who pretended to be named Anna, after having been internationally wanted for more than four years. She is suspected of being part of an international network of criminals, originating in Romania. Lulu Lakatos has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for the diamond coup in March 2016. The diamonds stolen at the time have never been found.
