The TFT Central website, which specializes in monitor tests, regularly provides an insight into the current plans of the display manufacturers. According to this, AU Optronics (AUO) and LG are already planning to produce the first 480 Hz displays. Meanwhile, LG promises IPS panels optimized with “IPS Black” with a better black value.

First displays with 480 Hz

Conventional monitors currently achieve a refresh rate of up to 360 Hz, which offers further (measurable) advantages over monitors with 240 Hz.

The next level is 480 Hz and is already part of the planning by AUO and LG Display. Both manufacturers are said to intend to start producing the first 480 Hz displays in the coming year. AUO has not yet given a specific date in 2022, but LG plans to start production in the 4th quarter of 2022. Any delays that are very frequent, especially in the monitor area, would then probably only be expected with the first 480 Hz monitors on the market from 2023.

IPS Black with deeper black

The “IPS Black” technology from LG Display is fueling great expectations. As the name suggests, a deeper black should be made possible than with conventional IPS panels. The image shown by TFT Central, which can be classified as a “best-case” scenario from LG's marketing department, also indicates improvements in the color display and the viewing angle stability. It remains to be seen whether this will at least reduce the “IPS Glow” that is annoying to many users.

The production of two LG panels with IPS Black is currently planned for January 2022: At 27 inches and 31.5 inches diagonal, both should deliver 4K UHD with 3,840 × 2,160 pixels, probably covering a large proportion of the DCI-P3 color spectrum and be better positioned in terms of blue light reduction (Low Blue Light).

One of the most exciting developments is the planned development of their so-called “IPS Black” technology. There's not a massive amount of information provided at this stage but we do know that this is designed to improve black depth and rendering on IPS panels when viewed from a variety of angles, including from the side where current IPS panels show pale “IPS glow” and appear more washed out and pale.

New mini-LED panels

The LM315WR3 IPS panel from LG with 31.5 inches, 4K UHD and 60 Hz is now being produced and is said to have a mini LED backlight with more than 2,000 dimming zones and a certification according to DisplayHDR 1000, which is one of the top spots A brightness of at least 1,000 cd/m² must be possible.

The LM270WR8-SSE1, which displays the UHD resolution on 27 inches and has over 1,560 mini-LED zones, is planned for the future more for gamers with a refresh rate of 144 Hz. This should shine with up to 1,250 cd/m² and also meet the requirements of DisplayHDR 1000. However, the start of production of the 27-inch mini-LED panel from LG will not take place until the fourth quarter of 2022.

Larger color range

Before the end of this year, LG is also planning screens that meet 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. The displays marketed as “Nano IPS” currently deliver up to 98 percent of DCI-P3 thanks to the nano-coating.

Achievement of 90 percent and more for the even larger color space Rec. 2020 is also targeted for the coming year.

Much Curved-VA with 240 Hz at AUO

In another article, TFT Central deals with new displays from AU Optronics. Curved VA panels with 240 Hz are expected this year. Among them is the M315QVR02.0 with 4K UHD, 144 Hz, 1000R and 31.5 inches, which is to be manufactured in the third quarter of 2021.

A whole series of other curved VA panels with 240 Hz should also have lower resolutions at radii of 1000R or 1500R and will also go into production this year.

Mini-LED-Panel with 160 Hz

In addition to new panels with FALD backlight with up to 576 zones, AUO is also planning a 32-inch panel with mini LED backlight (M320QAN02.A) that has 2,304 light zones and a refresh rate of 160 Hz. According to the current status, the panel should be manufactured from August 2021. A mini LED panel with 27 inches and 144 Hz is planned for the third quarter of 2021.

360 Hz with TN technology

The first 360 Hz monitors on the market all have an AHVA panel from AUO, which is comparable to IPS panels. Even if IPS panels now achieve fast switching times, TN technology is still considered the fastest for LC displays in terms of response time. The first TN panel with 360 Hz is to be developed by AUO to meet these demands, but details are missing.

A flat VA panel will soon be available with the M315QVN02.0. Panel with 31.5 inches, 4K UHD, 144 Hz and DisplayHDR 600 from AUO will be available. AUO will soon serve the area of “ultra-wide displays” with various new 34-inch displays with 3,440 × 1,440 pixels in 21: 9 format.
