The glass specialist Corning wants to offer its hardened and scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass to smartphone manufacturers for use in cameras in the future. The manufacturer names lower reflections and higher scratch resistance as advantages of their own product. Samsung is said to be the first manufacturer to use the new solution.

For use in smartphone cameras, Corning has chosen the “Gorilla Glass with DX” or “DX +”, which has so far been the case was mainly used for wearables such as smartwatches and fitness trackers.

98 percent of all reflections prevented

In this area of application, it is particularly important that a high proportion of the incident light is not reflected by the lens, but at best reaches the sensor completely behind the lens. According to Corning, these properties are also in demand for smartphone cameras. In a promotional video, other glasses and coatings not mentioned by name are shown with a permeability of 95 percent, while Gorilla Glass comes to 98 percent.

DX + should come close to sapphire glass

In terms of scratch resistance, Corning also contrasts its own solution with an anti-reflective coating customary on the market and its own Gorilla Glass. Unsurprisingly, the Gorilla Glass with DX performed best in a horizontal scratch test with 1 and 2 kg loads. Gorilla Glass with DX + is even more resistant and shows practically no scratches after the test. Corning argues that the glass is almost as scratch-resistant as sapphire glass.

Samsung wants to use glass for cameras

Sapphire crystal is mainly used in high-quality watches, but the more expensive versions of the Apple Watch are also advertised with it. The technical data for the iPhone 12 (Pro) and iPhone SE also includes the note “Lens cover made of sapphire crystal”. In the Android environment, Corning names Samsung as the first manufacturer to use Gorilla Glass DX for the cameras. The timing of the announcement suggests that appropriately equipped smartphones will be presented for the next Galaxy Unpacked on August 11th. The foldable smartphones Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3.
