Currently, reports are piling up about the “dying” GeForce RTX 3090 from EVGA while playing the new open-world MMO New World from Amazon Games, the closed beta of which started yesterday. Apparently, a missing FPS limit in the game menu causes a very high load on the graphics card, which cannot cope with this.

Problem occurs with RTX 3090 from EVGA on

Twitch streamer Gladd, among others, draws attention to the problem via his Twitter account. In his tweet, he warns that playing the New World beta destroyed his EVGA RTX 3090 and so did many others.

In the New World forum as well as on Reddit, there are more and more similar problem reports that almost exclusively relate to GeForce RTX 3090 from the manufacturer EVGA.

The screen is already black in the game menu

“Goatz” was one of the first to describe in the New World forum that when the beta was loaded, the fan speed of his EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra increased to its maximum, the FPS dropped to 0, the monitors went black and the graphics card was no longer recognized has been. After a restart and in the test with other games, the graphics card worked without any problems. But the same thing happened when New World started again, only this time he heard a loud bang. Since then, his RTX 3090 has not started at all.

The creator of the thread on Reddit also reports a “bricked” EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra, which has already quit its service within the New World game menu. Some commentators report that their EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 failed in a similar manner. There are very few votes from owners of an EVGA model who are apparently not affected or who allegedly have similar problems with a model from another manufacturer.

A missing FPS limit could trigger a defect

There are many indications that a suspected defect in the RTX 3090 from EVGA is revealed by a high load in the New World game menu. It is believed that the lack of FPS limitation in the menu leads to extremely high FPS rates. Normally, however, this should only lead to a high energy requirement with a correspondingly high level of heat development and possible “coil whine”, but not damage the graphics card. It is therefore conceivable that the series does not have adequate overload or overheating protection. A statement from EVGA is not yet available.

Here and there, reference is made to an old problem that caused the GeForce RTX 3080 to crash. However, this problem was fixed with a driver update and occurred across all manufacturers.

Own FPS limit as a workaround

Before the issue is clarified, owners of a GeForce RTX 3090 from EVGA should avoid New World or other games without FPS limits in the menu or even lend a hand: You can use the Nvidia control panel Set your own FPS limit globally or for individual games (see screenshot).
