More than 130 deaths have been claimed in Germany and 24 in Belgium. There are many indications that the death toll will rise in the future as rescue efforts progress.

Hundreds of people are injured and many are still missing. Thousands of people have also become homeless due to the floods.

This week's floods are the worst natural disaster to hit Germany since 1962, when about 350 people died when a storm surge swept over northern Germany.

The community of Erfstadt-Blessem, north of Ahrweiler, has a spectacular “drain hole “occurred as a result of the water masses. The manhole has formed at the gravel pit, Kieswerk Blessem, which is located just outside Erfstadt-Blessem.
