The past week was clearly dominated by the new Windows 11. Build 21996.1 is circulating in advance on the Internet and already shows many innovations, especially the new design. The next operating system from Microsoft, whose name there is hardly any more doubt, will most likely be officially presented next Thursday.

Less than a week and a half before the official announcement, an ISO from Windows 11 made it onto the Internet and has been dissected ever since. Build 21996.1 comes with a redesigned user interface that has many parallels to Windows 10X. However, Windows 10X was removed from the roadmap by Microsoft in May – not surprisingly, given Windows 11 and its strong similarities in many areas. For Windows 10 there should be a major design update called “Sun Valley” so far, but it may have become the update to Windows 11.

First impression of Windows 11

ComputerBase also procured and installed the build and made first comparisons with the current Windows 10 21H1. The installation can be carried out with a valid Windows 10 key as well as with a previously activated installation of the operating system. The installation as an incremental update from Windows 10 as well as a new installation from a storage medium takes about the same time as before under Windows 10.

New start menu and no more tiles

After the successful login, Windows 11 welcomes the user with a redesigned desktop, on which, in addition to the recycle bin, only Microsoft Edge is found as a browser. The redesigned taskbar with its new and centrally positioned icons immediately catches the eye. A click on the also revised start menu reveals: Microsoft has completely removed the tiles (Live Tiles). In future, only pinned programs and all applications will be available for selection, and folders are no longer in the start menu.

The report on the first impressions of Windows 11 goes into more detail on the desktop, start menu, settings, control panel, Windows Explorer, TPM requirement, various Windows 11 versions and an AMD graphics driver with WDDM 3.0.
