Lenovo is renewing its range of mobile workstations in the ThinkPad P1, ThinkPad P15 and ThinkPad P17 series. Intel processors of the 11th Core and Xeon generation, Ampere graphics cards from Nvidia and new screens are finding their way into notebooks. The first models should be available in Germany from the end of July.

ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 comes in 16:10 format

The biggest changes come with the ThinkPad P1 Gen 4, which Lenovo is converting from 16: 9 to 16:10 format. The three screens on offer have a resolution of 3,840 × 2,400 and 1,920 × 1,200 pixels, respectively, and thus offer more space in height. The top is an IPS panel with 4K +, 100 percent Adobe RGB, 600 cd/m² and Dolby Vision. The new aspect ratio brings the display to 16 inches instead of the previous 15.6 inches, but thinner edges ensure that the case largely retains its previous dimensions. But the touchpad and cooling have become bigger, where a vapor chamber and inlets in the keyboard are supposed to provide more reserves.

OLED option for the ThinkPad P15 Gen 2

ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 and ThinkPad P17 Gen 2 keep the previous 16: 9 format. For the ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 there is now an OLED option that combines 4K resolution with Dolby Vision and should offer 400 cd/m². 4K, but here on an IPS panel, is also available for the ThinkPad P17 Gen 2, which is the largest of the mobile workstations at 17.3 inches. This is reflected in the dimensions and weight, as the technical data (table at the end of the article) make clear.

Tiger Lake- H45 and Nvidia Ampere

What all three notebooks have in common is the switch to Intel Tiger Lake-H45, with Core and Xeon processors being available. The exact SKUs are not yet known, but at least for the Xeon models, only the Xeon W-11855M and the Xeon W-11955M are possible.

Depending on the model, the new processors can be combined with up to 64 GB or 128 GB DDR4-3200 (also ECC) and up to 6 TB SSD storage. The ThinkPad P1 has two M.2 slots for this, and the other two models even have three slots.

The graphics cards are also new, with Nvidia amps being used throughout , once with the workstation models up to the RTX A5000 with 16 GB and with the ThinkPad P1 also in the consumer variants GeForce RTX 3070 (8 GB) and 3080 (16 GB).

All three workstations offer a wide variety of connections and a selection of operating systems (see table). As a special feature, WWAN can also be configured, with the ThinkPad P1 also with 5G via the Snapdragon X55 modem from Qualcomm.

Market launch in July and August

Lenovo wants the ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 from August at prices starting at 2,099 euros, the ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 will be launched in Germany from the end of July at prices from 1,749 euros and the ThinkPad P17 Gen 2 from August at prices from 1,779 euros.
