Mia Wadelius, professor at Uppsala University, leads a project to map side effects to covid-19 vaccines.

The study will by immunological and genetic analyzes examine the underlying mechanisms and risk factors for serious side effects of the various vaccines against covid-19. The hope is to be able to identify people in the future who are at risk of severe side effects from one type of vaccine, and then instead offer another vaccine.

– We map all types of vaccine-related side effects, but focus on serious side effects. In short, Uppsala's part of the project is to participate in an epidemiological survey of the panorama of vaccine-related side effects and to identify people all over Sweden who have had serious side effects and recruit them for studies. We will also carry out large-scale genetic analyzes and analysis of autoantibodies, says Mia Wadelius.

The six research environments that receive funding from the Swedish Research Council are based on collaborations between different regions. They will look at different aspects of healthcare needs.

– The research environments we fund in this call are important to further increase knowledge about the safety, efficacy and optimal uses of covid-19 vaccines. They will also help build a valuable infrastructure for research, says Madeleine Durbeej-Hjalt, Secretary General of Medicine and Health at the Swedish Research Council.
