Seagate One Touch: New edition of the portable SSD well twice as fast

Seagate's compact portable SSDs of the One Touch series are being reissued with a faster interface and a different design. The new One Touch SSD should achieve transfer rates of up to 1,030 MB/s more than twice as high and uses USB 3.2 Gen 2 with connector type C for this.

At IFA 2019 Seagate had introduced the first generation of the One Touch SSD, the One Touch family until then consisted exclusively of external HDDs. The One Touch SSD should achieve a maximum data transfer rate of 400 MB/s via USB 3.0, which is now called USB 3.2 Gen 1. While internal SATA SSD technology is sufficient for this, it must be something faster for the successor.

A good 1,000 MB/s with new technology

Seagate speaks of “read and write speeds of up to 1,030 MB/s”, which clearly exceeds the previous maximum and also the maximum of the SATA interface (~ 560 MB/s) and USB 3.0 (~ 450 MB/s). Even if Seagate does not give any details about the technology, the use of an internal NVMe SSD with a PCIe interface makes sense. PCIe 3.0 x2 SSDs could already deliver enough power to exhaust USB 3.2 Gen 2: The mentioned 1,030 MB/s are just below the practical limit of the external interface.

While the first One Touch SSD was initially only offered with 500 GB and 1 TB, the new One Touch SSD comes with 500 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB storage space. What has remained is the compact format with insignificantly changed dimensions of 70 × 50 × 10.6 mm (L × W × H) and a slightly higher weight of 74 grams. In terms of optics, however, Seagate takes it easy and does without colorful camouflage Template. Instead, the new One Touch SSD is offered in plain black, silver or blue. Seagate speaks of an aluminum housing with textile elements on the sides, while the first generation has significantly more textile. If the computer does not support the new USB-C connector, a USB-C to USB-A cable is included.

Thanks to exFAT formatting, the external SSD should be directly compatible with Windows or Mac systems. An app can also be used to back up photos and videos from an Android smartphone, for example. Seagate also offers the Sync Plus software as an accessory for automatic backups or folder mirroring. With a time limit, buyers also get access to the calendar app Mylio Create (1 year) and the Adobe Creative Cloud (4 months). Rescue Data Recovery Services for data recovery in an emergency are also offered for this product. The product pages provide more information.
