Project “Sun Valley”: Windows 95 icons should disappear from Windows 10

With the “Sun Valley” project, a makeover in the form of a design update, the last Windows 95 icons are to be completely removed from Windows 10 by the end of the year. In addition to the new start menu and file explorer, as well as an overall more uniform Windows 10 design, the legacy issues are disposed of.

No more trace of Windows 95

As the Windows Latest website first reported, the Windows Devices and Experiences team under the direction of Panos Panay is also planning to remove or at least replace the system icons from the Windows 95 era under Shell32.DLL in order to achieve a modern and consistent “look” in this area as well.

Already has been driving since the end of 2019 Microsoft is steadily advancing its planning for new icons for Windows, Office and apps with the new Windows 10 UI.

Most recently, the operating system received various new icons for Explorer with Insider Preview Build 21343 and completely redesigned system icons in fluent design with Insider Preview Build 21327.

< p class = "p text-width"> The Sun Valley project is supposed to bring all these ingredients together into a consistent user interface and give Windows 10 an even more uniform “look”.

Also to be added floating menus with rounded corners for the taskbar, which should reach users in the second half of the year with the update to Windows 10 21H2 and belong to the design language of Sun Valley.

The new design comes as a Cobalt update (” 21H2 ” )

Sun Valley is scheduled to be completed by the holiday season 2021, which in the US begins around Thanksgiving at the end of November. It is to be released as part of the major update called “Cobalt”, also known as “21H2”.

With the May 2021 update alias Windows 10 21H1 is now available for the time being a slightly smaller update on the timetable.
