CBS: use of instant messaging among young Dutch people decreases

The use of social networks among young people from 12 to 24 years in 2013 will be slightly decreased. Sites like Twitter and Facebook continued in 2013 as popular, but instant-messagingdiensten saw the number of young Dutch people sometimes drop.

This is evident from the report ‘ICT, Knowledge and the economy 2014’ of the CBS. Total owned 93 percent of Dutch young people in 2013 have an account on at least one social network; in 2011 and 2012 was 95 percent. However, this group by some distance the largest user of social networks; although the difference with 25 – to 44-year-olds since last year has decreased to 9 percent. The CBS expects ‘instant-messagingdiensten’ as MSN and Whatsapp also among the social networks. Right there was the decline, from 67 percent to 58 percent. The popularity of other social networks such as Twitter and Facebook continued, with 88% stable.

The overall use of social networks among the rest of the Dutch population is increasing, especially among Dutch people aged 25 to 44 years and 45 to 64 years. The most popular networks among these groups are just like young people, sites like Facebook and Twitter; from all respondents, indicates about 60 percent to make use of these networks. Among 25 – to 44-year-olds, the use of professional networking sites especially; the percentage of these people that uses sites such as LinkedIn increased from 29 percent in 2011 to 38 percent in 2013.

Due to the increasing use by people over the age of 25 years remains the overall use of social networks in the Netherlands will increase.
