Google has a new b lwa taversie of its Chrome browser released, in which support has been added for the Web Speech api. This allows developers of websites and web apps support for voice control to input fields add.

The Web Speech api is based on the public-speech-api, which is currently in development at W3C and works on the basis of JavaScript. Although Google does not explicitly mentions the narration most likely first to Google servers where the conversion of speech to text occurs. Then the textual representation of the spoken text sent back to the browser. A demo of Google shows a custom input field in the upper corner an icon of a microphone. If this is clicked can get started with text input via speech.

The latest beta of Chrome also brings improvements with it around the install of extensions. Using a registry method was up to now possible to silently extensions to add to Chrome on Windows machines. That possibility was there to give users an opt-in offer if they have software installed that additional Chrome extensions wanted to add. The beta of Chrome 25 makes this impossible and disables extensions that are installed automatically, which gives the user the choice to manually enable again.
